Do Your Research

Before beginning to look for a vehicle, you should ask yourself if there's a certain type or body style that suits your needs as a driver best. By choosing which kind of vehicle to search for, you'll have a more specific list of items to inspect. While researching the vehicle, be sure to find out what the common problems are for the models you're considering.

Exterior Checks

Always check the body condition. Walk around the vehicle and note any scratches, dents or rust. Take a look at the body panels also — everything should line up evenly, and the doors, hood and trunk should open and close without problems. While walking around the vehicle, also inspect the tires. They should all be the same brand, and they should be in good condition (no cracks, bulges, scuffing or bad tread). Lastly, always be sure to check the lights. They should all function properly, have no cracks or damage, and they should show no signs of moisture.

Interior Checks

When you check out the inside, always check for any odor. If the car smells like mold or mildew, that could indicate a water leak or flood damage. Additionally, check the seats for any wear or tears in the upholstery. You should ensure the seats work properly and that you can get the driver's seat into a comfortable position for your needs. You'll also need to test out the controls and instruments to make sure they work properly. Look at the roof, as well, for any signs of staining or water leaking through a sunroof or window.

Under the Hood

When you look under the hood, check the hoses, belts, fluids, oil and transmission fluid. They should all be at their proper levels, and there shouldn't be any cracks, leaks or water. Look underneath the vehicle, too, to check for any leaks below.

The Test Drive

The test drive is perhaps one of the most critical parts of your inspection. When you start the engine, listen for how long it takes the car to start and for any odd noises. Be sure to take the vehicle on various roads so that you can test it at different speeds. Also, check that the transmission shifts smoothly and that the brakes provide good stopping power without pulling the vehicle to either side.

Paperwork and Mechanic's Inspection

Before you sign off on all the paperwork to purchase your vehicle, it's a good idea to get the vehicle identification number (VIN) and run a vehicle history report. Most dealers provide a report on all of their used vehicles, but you can also have a trusted repair shop thoroughly inspect the vehicle before you purchase it.
